One up front against such poor opposition
|
Somebody please explain how that's a good idea.
Noble and Nolan together in the middle of the park was clearly not working. Hopefully Bilic will have another look at the match and realise that them together just does not work.

Using these games as an experiment, testing formations, what works, what doesn't,
Pretty much a pre-season run out,
No problem for me.

Wasn't everyone expecting Lee to start? I bet he was gutted.
I've got a lot of faith in Bilic, he aint gonna sit and watch shit week after week that the oaf was happy to do.

All the games leading up to the PL will be experiments. Bilic is looking at formations and individuals. I think everyone will get a chance.
Think about it, Bilic has come in, he's got the players he had and the ones we have bought recently. But he needs to work out in his mind what works best for the squad he has.
He probably has an idea of how he wants to play but it may be too soon for that.

Agree Russ.
Win/win for Bilic.
1) well, we won. 2) chance to see some more players in action.

Experimental line up, yes.
Experimental formation? Don't know about that.
I'd hope last night is no indication of how he intends to set the team up, with the seemingly one and only tactic of get the ball to the winger and put a cross in if you can beat the full back for the isolated striker to try and win a header against 2-3 defenders because he's the only man in the box.
We didn't need 2 deep midfielders last night either- I was surprised he didn't change that.

I think against lesser opposition much of the time the best, or only, way to create a scoring chance is by going wide and trying to get round the full back to stick a cross in.
None of the teams we play in the qaulifiers will be open and attacking. They don't have the quality of player to expand the play and come at you in numbers. So much of what they do is to sit tight, keep their shape rigid and keep men behind the ball.
Because of this it can get frustrating for the dominant team. We saw this last night and against Lusitans where Zarate, Noble, Poyet, Nolan etc are almost trying to pass their way around a brick wall. We moved the ball well last night but it very often comes to nothing.
Once they got the ball wide to JOB, Jarvis or Cresswell then last night they did well to create space and delivered the crosses. I thought their keeper had a very good game dealing with crosses last night. But, as I say, it was the best way to try and score for last night's game.
I think once we get into PL and (hopefully) EL latter stages although we will be playibng better sides it will allow us to be more creative as we will be able to break into space left by opponents attacking us. I think the likes of Payet and Zarate (if he is picked) will then be able to create much more going through the middle.

Completely agree....its pre season still, new manager etc. You would have thought going two up top to kill the game in the first leg would be ideal as we could have played 2 at the back and still wouldn't have worried us.
we were missing probably 8 first team starters from that game last night, dont read too much into it. It was just fantastic that we got 31,000 + supporters there again last night and I suspect we will take a full allocation to Malta. - Lovely weather !!
a week or two before the arsenal game is when it will take shape and you can start to be a little picky...
Keep supporting..

I thought it was well known that Bilic preferred a 4-2-3-1 formation? I didn't expect Nolan and Noble to be part of the 3 though, they are fucking painful to watch.
I wonder whether Noble will make it to the OS with us but that's a debate for another day.

From what I saw and heard, please correct me if I am wrong, he was playing with the formation he has in the past but the personel did not work. He had wingers and a 10 and a single striker with a couple defensive midfielders.
Zarate despite the assist for the goal did not deliver what a 10 should.
Maiga does not try enough to be a lone striker.
Nolan is not a defensive midfielder, nor is Noble really.
From our transfer dealings though, I am not sure he going to play that way because he has not gone out and got the couple of starting wingers he needs to do so.

'Nolan is not a defensive midfielder'
1 goal last season in 33 games would suggest he can no longer be considered an attacking midfielder either.

If Jenkinson would've been ready for last night (is he registered?) then he would've torn them apart, what with how much of the ball JOB got, but obviously did nothing with.

Agreed. Assuming we get through this round the 2 EL games following would need to be pretty serious coming as they do 10 and 3 days before Arsenal.

On another day Maiga could have had a hat trick & the scoreline, maybe not the performance, would have looked better
You can't blame Bilic for trying out the old guard to evaluate if they have further use at the club
On the face of it, Maiga, Nolan & possibly Noble on last nights performance might be considering where their future lies!
With the team he put out I'm sure Bilic would & should have expected a far more comfortable win

"One up front against such poor opposition"
Poor opposition? Defensively they were well organised and pretty good I thoight. We never had the gumption or the quality to break them down.

I think he aired in the side of caution, not knowing the players that well he probably took a stab at what was played last season given then line up.
Very cautious approach

Also some opinions that this was a preseason warm up. It wasn't it is a knock out CUP competition, if we lose over the two legs we're out of Europe.
